Museum Of World Insects And Natural Wonders -6 tips for sketching when traveling

Chiang Mai is a lovely city up in the north of Thailand.

I went on a fantastic trip from January till March. I was very lucky to get to visit South East Asia before the Coronavirus shut down the world.
There, my partner and I came across a wonderful quirky museum just outside the old city in Chang Mai. It is here I got the inspiration to paint the amazing rain forest insects in watercolor.
I have some traveling tips for you now. I know that for the moment we just have to dream about traveling, but, I am hoping to go back, especially to Laos and Thailand.

So here are my top 6 tips for sketching when traveling.

  1. Find a style that is easy.
  2. Don’t think too much.
  3. Let go and try new ways to draw and paint.
  4. Do some writing too, record the mood, or phrases from the language, the smell, and taste of food, or a conversation you overhear.
  5. Look for the essence. Find the main things that fascinate you.
  6. Record the things you want to remember.

The Museum Of World Insects And Natural Wonder

fills a two-story building. It is a unique little pearl of a museum with beautiful butterflies to paint and various items that can be touched for good luck. The whole place is just fascinating and a pure treat for the eye. Now I am back in Norway painting watercolors I have tons of photos from there for inspiration.

There were families visiting too and the children were particularly intrigued (just like me). Spending two hours in the museum made me very happy even though my back was sore and the heat was hitting us.

It started with a scientist and doctor studying malaria and the mosquitoes that carry the disease in the north of Thailand. they found 400 different species of mosquito and samples are pinned up across several glass displays. During the search for new species of mosquitoes in the jungles, they found many amazing things which they collected and brought home.

The ground floor is crammed with insects, butterflies, beetles, bee, and wasp nests. Some are donated. In among it all are some photos of the founders and information on the research they did into malaria and other tropical diseases found in the area. It gave me the chill reading and seeing pictures of people having the diseases.

Upstairs is a collection of fossils, gemstones, and very unusual rocks. which my partner who is a geologist found very fascinating And not to forget there is also a collection of beautiful seashells.

This little private museum is well worth a visit if you are in the area. the museum takes about 1 – 2 hours. Find them on Facebook ,  Museum Of World Insects And Natural Wonders
