What watercolor brushes to bring on the go

Choose Your Paint Brushes

I am sketching upstairs in this lovely cafe in Mae Hong Son.

(January 2020)

We went on a small airplane from Chang Mai to Mae Hong Son which has a tiny airport with just two flights per day. (In Thailand) Of course I brought my watercolors brushes and paints and there were so many inspiring things to paint.

For this wonderful journey, I had carefully selected a set of 8 brushes which were simply the best tools to do the magic. This is how I choose just 8 brushes to bring with me.

When it comes to brushes you tend to get what you pay for, so buy the best quality you can afford. Really good watercolor brushes are known for how much water they can hold and the ability to return to their original shape.  Poor quality brushes may not perform the same way. For example cheaper, synthetic brushes tend to hold less water and may not keep their point for long.

In the long run, you can find yourself spending more money on three cheap brushes rather than one quality brush. A good one will lasts you for decades.

When  choosing the brushes, I wanted  a variety of shapes and sizes. There are some main shapes for versatility, detail work and wash work.

After some thinking, these are the brushes I picked for my 3 month traveling.

  • Flat brush – I have a good flat brush I got it for a very low price, it is good for laying down washes and for linear brushstrokes.
  • Water-brush

While were here we stayed in a wonderful small hotel Palmhouse .

We were greeted by this lovely dog who was called Reception.  The hotel had a moat of crystal clear water populated by some enormous carp koi. The  room we had was to relax in, and then you open the shutters to the teak trees and the village sounds and smells and you know, you can rest later.  I have more about Mai Hong Son and what to see there  The Hill Tribes Of North Western Thailand.
