What hobbies do artists have? My hobby is playing SECOND LIFE

What is your hobby? What hobbies do artists have?  Me, I am in Second Life.

It is Summer and I am so happy to be in Dublin now. If you follow me you know I love sketchbooks, the painting above is a painting of my favorite places in Temple bar. This pub means a lot to me for many reasons.

After reading an article in The New York Times that people were earning a lot of money in a virtual world just by selling furniture or clothing. I logged in to Second Life  in 2007 and had no idea what it was or where it would take me

instantly I was blown away just by the fact I was a “Person” walking and flying around in a virtual world. And in an hour, I was chatting away with somebody in Africa and then a person someone in England and I could fly! (Today, this seems normal with social media, but remember, this was back in 2007, and most people hadn’t even created a facebook account).

At that time I had pneumonia and I stayed in bed for about six weeks, I had a shiny new laptop, I was kept warm under my big Norwegian duvet and I had lots of time to discover the new game. When I think back on it, it reminded me of being 8-year-old playing with dolls, it was the same feeling. I was a kid again. It also feelt I was in a movie so I swoped the TV for this game.

I got people there that I still have on my friend list and some have even visited me in real life. Besides meeting people, what I love about it is that you can contribute to this world, by creating buildings, objects or even animations and these are some of the factors that make Second Life such a unique online game. You can sell your stuff for real money,  it is not like most games where you get into a world that is designed for you. In Second Life you can set up a gallery and start selling your art. Let me know if you are interested to have an art show in here.

In Second Life you can find an area called Dublin and a perfect little pub called The Blarney Stone and it is just like The Oliver St John Gogarty´s bar, in Dublin´s Temple Bar. This is my favorite place to go dancing in Dublin and Second Life Dublin. I have met many interesting folks that visit the place.

Below is a little video of me in the Blarney Stone in Second Life, and then a little video of me in the real pub in Real life.

So what is Second Life?

  • Second Life is an online world where you can create an avatar a virtual representation of yourself. you can be who you want to be, like yourself, or a dragon, fairy, princess, old, young, man, woman.
  • You will find communities and connect with people around the world who share your passions.
  • You can talk or chat with other avatars (real people sitting on their computer somewhere in the world),
  • You can do almost anything in Second Life. You can buy and decorate a house, invite friends round for dinner. You can even go sky diving, ride on a dolphin, rob a bank, go to prison, get married, have a baby.

Residents in Second Life aren’t really in a game, though there are games inside Second Life. They inhabit a virtual world free of pre-determined goals or tasks, just like the real world.

Dwight Schrute’s second life. It was featured in the American version of The Office, which made fun of the fact that it’s a virtual world where you could work at a paper company. 2007

I really think Second Life is good for people who have physical limitations, or it can be fantastic for a social person like I was in 2007, a mom that had to stay home most evenings for the kid is having their sweet dreams, I was used to going out and meeting friends in a cafe, pub or bar.

If you just want to explore Second Life, to join is free at Second Life.  A basic membership costs nothing and allows you to create an avatar and look around the world.

After joining you’ll need to download a 3D browsing software, called an SL Viewer. When it is downloaded you can use the links under to visits this the pub  (this will launch the Second Life application from your web browser).

If you want to buy land and get a  home you have to upgrade to a premium membership, which costs $8.25 a month

  1. That’s great Magny I used to play a very similar game called AION by NcSoft a very intriguing game the only game that back in 2008 to 2010 captured my attention for the amazing graphics and the fact that you can create your own beautiful character and chose a class I was a “Templar” I loved to create my armors and be so powerful also there you can have a life in the game you have wings for when you fly, you teleport from and to destinations, you can craft your armor, weapons, be an Alchemist like I was and make your own potions for fighting etc, I had lots of fun flying in the abyss and their imaginary world it was crazy! I mean you really feel to be in the life your character! Since the game is an MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) which like in Second Life you can connect with real people other players anywhere in the world. I made lots of friends at that time, we created our own Legion and group and we were all happy to meet up and jump from our real life into our fantasy life every day after work or so. I was playing it was my escape as at that time I was going through a lot in life. Like you some friends still real life friends I am not playing anymore cause it take lots of time and is easily addictive as you love that fantasy life and I had to get my Art going! But at times I miss that game which I know is improved and expanded a lot more now! 😉

    1. WOW!.❤️ How cool. I never heard about AION. But it sounds like the same. I can see why you stay away from the game, since it is easily addictive. It makes me relax so that`s one of the main reasons why I go there. But, I must admit that I would love to show you around. Anyway, I am thinking of holding an exhibition in a gallery there and you can exhibit if you like ? ? ?
