Hello, spring and my friends!

Ooolala! I am so excited to be going to France to hold a drawing and painting course in 10 days, and for this, I want to pack all my favorite things that I LOVE to use when I work in my own personal travel sketchbook.  So, I have been looking in my sketching bag and try to make an overview of what I got in there.

The supplies I bring when sketching outdoors are not always the same. It depends on where I go. When I first began sketch I just had a pencil and a big sketchbook in my bag. So I started small, simple and cheap. Over the years I have slowly built up the number of art supplies, materials and I have moved towards the more expensive stuff.

Now I have a little collection of several watercolor boxes that I bring for different reasons. For drawing on location in the city I typically bring my fountain pens, pencil, watercolor travel box, and a smaller sketchbook. But, if I go by car I can bring lots of stuff, more paint, sometimes two travel boxes and larger sketchbooks and even coffee or tea, snacks, you name it. When going to the cafe for an hour or so, or on a walk I will bring just the minimum.

The supplies I bring sketching on holidays

What I usually bring when sketching.

  • Moleskine sketchbooks
  • Small blocks of hot press watercolor paper
  • Clips to hold the paper in place and/or sketchbook paper from flapping in a breeze
  • Camera Smartphone.
  • Watercolor travel box.
  • Naturally Smart Palette Watercolor Pencils
  • I travel with at least two brushes and now  I have invested in some good travel brushes.
  • Pencil sets. I like to bring 2B – 4B – 6B.
  • Fountain pen.
  • Waterproof pens.
  • Sharpener.
  • Erasers.
  • Sack, or bag with lots of pockets.
  • Bottle of water and a cup
  • Something to sit on, ( a cushion )

You don’t have to bring all of this. Each individual has their own preference for what they need.

I hope this post will be helpful to make you outdoor sketch successful, whatever it takes to make you relax and do the work. If you are into this already please share with us and what tools you always bring. I always love to hear your experiences.
