Painting landscape – Create you coffee painting

You can use your favourite coffee to create beautiful art work

Happy New Year everyone!

This week I have been painting with coffee to prepare for my students´ home assignments. I work in a culture school in Norway teaching kids and teenagers art. And, like a lot of the places in the world we are all staying at home. So, the kids will get a project to do at home. If they where in school, they would  be painting now, so the assignment should be painting too, but we can’t expect everybody have paint at home. But, tea or coffee is something most people have at home and coffee or tea can make great artwork.

It can be done on any paper, but watercolor paper is really perfect, a lot of the watercolor techniques can be used for coffee paintings too. By using different tones of brown, you can paint  as you might with watercolor and create beautiful monochromatic paintings.

To create your masterpiece, you’ll need some lighter colors and other, darker ones. I make at least 3-4 different solutions. If you want to create other shades, simply add more water to make them lighter,  or to darken the color, then simply add more instant coffee grains to your paint.

Create you coffee painting

  • watercolor paper or just any paper
  • Instant coffee
  • Paintbrush
  • Water
  • Small bowls for the different shades of coffee or tea
  • Cup to hold clear water
  • To speed up the drying process you can use a hair dryer

Add coffee powder in different quantities in mixing tray and add water to dilute it. Less coffee with more water will create lighter shade and more coffee with less water will create darker shade. The more water you add to the coffee, lighter the shade becomes. Generally three or four shades are enough for a painting.
