Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is not just a busy international airport; it is also a unique place for culture and art. Many travelers are unaware that they can experience several interesting museums directly within the airport, making the waiting time between flights an exciting experience.
One of the most remarkable attractions is the Rijksmuseum Schiphol, since 2002 it has been one of the few museums in the world located inside an airport.
The first time I stumbled across this “hidden” museum was some years ago, I had no clue there was something like that in an airport. Since then it has given me many great art experiences, for example, I have seen paintings by Rembrandt and Vermeer. 🌸 This small yet impressive museum offers visitors the chance to see a collection of masterpieces from the Dutch Golden Age. The exhibition is free for all travelers, making it a perfect stop for art lovers.
In addition to the Rijksmuseum, there is also an exhibition “Holland Boulevard,” where visitors can discover various artworks and installations from Dutch artists. This area is designed to give travelers a taste of Dutch culture, featuring everything from modern art to traditional crafts.
( It is very hard to take photos of the artwork without getting a reflection. )
For those with a little extra time before departure, there are also opportunities to participate in workshops and activities related to art and culture, providing an interactive experience. So, the next time you’re at Schiphol, remember that you can take some time to explore these unique museums and enrich your journey with artistic experiences.
The museum is open 24 hours a day, and for free! Rijksmuseum Schiphol is situated between Lounge 2 and Lounge 3 after passing through security it is located on the first floor of the terminal building, between piers E and F. Rijksmuseum in the Non-Schengen zone.
The airport is divided into Schengen and non-Schengen sections. If you are traveling within Europe (excluding Ireland and the UK) you will need to leave the Schengen zone which means going through a customs check. This is usually quick if you hold a European passport. You will also need to go through a customs check to get back into the Schengen zone, so be sure to leave plenty of time. If you are not sure, ask the staff, I have found that they are super helpful.
