As an artist, having the right supplies can make all the difference in the creative process and I often get asked what materials I use for my art. Over the years, I’ve tried countless products, but a few have truly stood out as my go-to essentials. Here’s a look at my favorite art supplies that I use again and again.
I have provided links for most of them if you want more details and get them. You will be redirected to Amazon in a new window through my affiliate link. Any purchases you make through the link (with some exceptions) will support me.
Watercolors
First on the list is my watercolor set. The vibrant pigments from Daniel Smith have a super smooth application making it a joy to work with. I love how versatile watercolors can be, allowing for everything from delicate washes to bold, striking colors. Experimenting with different brands has helped me find the perfect shades that suits my style.
The quality of watercolor paints can vary significantly from one brand to another, but that doesn’t mean you can’t mix them. I do love the Daniel Smith and Sennelier but there are many good brands. Ultimately, it all boils down to your taste and what you paint. I suggest you try out various brands to discover what resonates with you. Once you’ve found the colors you love, you can save some money by purchasing them in larger tubes.

Next, my collection of brushes from Billy Showell deserves a mention. Quality brushes should elevate your artwork, and I’ve invested in a range of sizes and shapes to suit different techniques. Whether I’m painting fine details or broad strokes, having the right brush makes the process smoother and more enjoyable. ( I will make more blog post about brushes.)

Next, a good sketchbook is essential for capturing ideas on the go. I prefer one with thick, textured paper that can handle various mediums, from pencils to ink. It’s my trusted companion for brainstorming and refining my artistic concepts. Many of my sketchbooks are watercolor Moleskine sketchbooks.
